We believe that knowledge opens doors to the world near and far. The instruction throughout our building aligns with New York State Standards. We model a love of learning across all areas of study and integrate content-rich texts into our language arts instruction. We utilize Amplify’s Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) in younger grade levels and Teach Like A Champion’s Reading Reconsidered in upper grade levels. Our Math instruction is informed by Great Minds’ Eureka curriculum.
Middle school students assume a greater level of independence through our departmentalized model. By 7th and 8th grade, students move between classrooms to learn alongside our dedicated Math, Science / Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Religion teachers. We also equip students to complete Algebra 1 in eighth grade.
Our teachers and leadership team engage in weekly professional development. In this way, they model lifelong learning and embody a growth mindset that allows them to continuously improve their practice and increase the quality of their teaching.
As you enter Sacred Heart, you will see a calm, safe learning environment and hear the productive joy that comes from a community of teachers and students who love to learn! This did not happen by accident. Rather, as a community of faith, our staff and students are reminded daily of our beliefs and values that they are called to embody at Sacred Heart and beyond.
Simple acts such as greeting each other and taking turns on the playground become ways for us to live out those beliefs on a daily basis. Religion classes are conducted at all grade levels and sacramental preparation is available. By instilling strong Christian habits, our students graduate ready to thrive and to help their communities do the same. Read more about our beliefs here.
Sacred Heart teachers conduct Title 1 sessions that reinforce the content taught in the classroom. Title 1 is a program through the Department of Education that funds small group instruction, making it free for eligible students to participate. Small group instruction amongst selected students takes place during and after school throughout the week.
As part of our holistic approach, Sacred Heart supports the social emotional growth of our students. Ms. Governale, our school psychologist, provides counseling services for individual students and small groups. Sacred Heart also partners with graduate students from Columbia’s Teachers College who work with students and teachers throughout the year.
We commit to meeting the needs of all students. Sacred Heart welcomes students with different learning needs. We endeavor to meet their mandates as written on their IESPs and 504 plans.
